Faced with a spiraling opioid crisis, law enforcement officials in Ulster County are embarking on a major effort to track and map drug overdoses in the region. “Heroin overdoses are out of control right now,” says District Attorney Holley Carnright.
Among the projects receiving funding: reduction of stormwater runoff, new traffic signals, crosswalks and protected bike lanes on Broadway; $500,000 for “the last piece of the puzzle” in the rail trail proposal, funding trailheads and converting the stretch between Cornell Street and the New York State Trolley Museum on the Rondout; and $300,000 for improvements to Kingston Point Park
Meter rates will double, and payment kiosks will be erected at city lots that had been free.
“These are families where if one thing goes wrong, something as simple as a blown tire, it becomes a crisis for the whole family.”
The allegations against Ulster Savings Bank are contained in lawsuit filed in federal court by the Fair Housing Justice Center and three black “testers,” who reported discriminatory treatment ranging from steering them away from white neighborhoods to offering them less attractive loans than less qualified white clients — over the course of a two-year investigation.
While Mayor Steve Noble said Monday the new plan for city parking, which will double meter rates and end free parking in municipal lots, will offer long-term discount rates for residents and commuters, he said determining the amount of the resident/commuter discount will have to wait until the city picks a vendor to install payment kiosks in the lots.

“Our current zoning is as laid out in the ’60’s for cities of that era,” said Mayor Steve Noble. “That’s not the kind of nimble zoning we need today.”
Mayor Steve Noble plans to meet with members of the Common Council next week to propose a new parking scheme that would double the cost of metered on-street spots and install payment kiosks in municipal lots that currently offer free parking.
“The Midtown arts district is really taking off…We want to be in a position to capitalize on that.”
