Onteora school budget passes easily, but low turnout a concern

With what appears to be the lowest turnout in at least the last ten years, voters in the Onteora School District approved both spending propositions and board candidates Tuesday, passing the coming school year’s $57,403,498 budget with 406 voting yes to 192 no, a $6 million capital project 455 to 141, and confirming newcomer Dafne DeJesus and incumbent president Kevin Salem as board trustees with 436 and 443 votes, respectively.

Trustees of the Onteora Central School District board of education, along with parents and students, voiced their displeasure over aspects of Superintendent Victoria McLaren’s proposed budget for the upcoming school year at the April 2 board meeting at Phoenicia Elementary. Some expressed concern that that very building might eventually be placed on the chopping block, along with a popular teacher and special education services.

Onteora bans Confederate flag, swastika after past incidents

The Onteora School Board voted 6-1 last month to ban displays of the Confederate flag and swastikas, revising the district’s code of conduct to include the symbols under prohibited conduct that “endangers the moral well-being, health, safety or welfare of others,” after incidents involving both symbols over the last two school years. The decision came just over a year after the board passed a resolution denouncing the flag as “a symbol of intimidation, harassment and hate.”
