The brand-new rainbow crosswalk across from New Paltz Village Hall got its first big workout last Sunday afternoon, as the 2018 Pride March made its way into Hasbrouck Park to kick off the LGBTQ Pride Festival that has been held there every June since 2005.
You can tell that the annual self-guided mobile artfest is imminent when dozens of brightly painted doors, unhinged, start popping up in the heart of the hamlet, fresh from their seasonal debut at the Gardiner Cupcake Festival.
“Her name is Shelly. She’s become very dear to us,” said Tahlia Quintero, one of the environmentally conscious young masterminds behind the public art project. “She’s all single-use plastic: lids, straws, flowerpots…”
Last week, a rainbow crosswalk was painted at the intersection of Hasbrouck and Tricor Avenues, across from Village Hall and the Peace Park, to honor the groundbreaking same-sex weddings that had been officiated nearby 14 years previously. The crosswalk will also serve as the Finish Line for the Hudson Valley Pride March coming up this Sunday, June 3.
