For anyone who had a hand in putting it up, however small, that playground will long stand as a reminder that their time on this planet was not entirely spent in vain. It’s a great feeling, of a physical sort that you don’t get from publishing an article. Paltzonians, we built this together: Give yourselves a little pat on the back. Wednesday-Sunday, Oct. 2-6: Of the more than 100 “Fiercely Independent” films being screened, 13 are having their world, North American or US premiere at Woodstock.
Saturday, Sept. 28: To put it mildly, Bard has found itself a new faculty superstar. Local audiences will get their first real chance to hear Tan Dun in action on Saturday, September 28 at 8 p.m., when he conducts the Conservatory Orchestra in a multimedia concert featuring excerpts from three classic martial arts movies that he scored.
This annual celebration of art and culture features more than 20 events including music, dance, readings, sculpture, theater, workshops, carnival, puppetmaking, gallery exhibits, films and street art, showcasing the range and depth of its local talent. The majority of events take place within walking distance around the scenic historic village of Saugerties.
Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 3-6: Of all the horrific dictators ever to plague Latin America, Rafael Trujillo was arguably one of the worst. Whether as president or behind-the-scenes military strongman, he ruled the Dominican Republic for 31 years with an iron hand. His personal hit squad roamed the capital, Santo Domingo – renamed Ciudád Trujillo during his reign – in a red Packard nicknamed the “car of death,” carro de la muerte. A national network of procurers rounded up preteen girls for him to rape. Within one week in 1937, he had his army butcher between 20,000 and 30,000 Haitians in a border incursion known as the Parsley Massacre.

The text for the resolution, titled “Condemnation of Hate Crimes,” enumerates several recent instances of vandalism targeting homes displaying rainbow flags in solidarity with the LGBTQ community, before going on to express strong official disapproval of such behavior.
This weekend’s festivities include a Fall Gala, fireworks, exhibitions, fly-fishing demo and the unveiling of Will Lytle’s children’s book.
Sunday, Sept. 22: The Chinese-born artist will present create a piece titled 1.7 Mile Lights to connect Church’s Olana with the Cole Site. He will reflect beams of light across the sky above the Hudson River to illuminate the bonds connecting the two 19th-century artists, their homes and our contemporary moment. The light performance will be visible from Olana’s Ridge Road, the Rip Van Winkle Bridge walkway and the Skywalk path from the Thomas Cole Site to the Bridge.
