They say you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. But for residents of a Saugerties co-housing community, it seems it is possible to choose one’s extended family.
The project is called the Wyldwyck River Camp, and it would be located on an 82-acre property abutting the Hudson River off Liberty St. behind the Glasco Firehouse.

What would they do there? They might bring a group of young people from the Boys and Girls Club to grow potatoes, for instance. Or they could organize field trips for youths. “We would be doing as much as possible without fossil fuels.”
A plan to convert an unused barn on a Malden Turnpike property to a wedding and entertainment venue was recently approved by the Saugerties town planning board.
The developer made changes to the plan in response to comments, including planting trees to screen the view of panels. But residents at a recent planning board meeting said those trees could end up blocking the view of the mountains.
Speakers conceded that solar energy offers a non-polluting source of electricity and is the wave of the future, but they contended the intersection of Old Kings Highway and Schoolhouse Road was the wrong location for it.
Neighbors say the solar farm would have a negative impact on the view of the mountains from a historic area. An informational meeting on the proposal was scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 10.
