Carthaigh Coffee, the newest-kid-on-the-block café offering an excellent cup, is owned and operated by an idealistic young man who ultimately wants to contribute his energy to creating a tighter community in Marbletown.
Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 28-29: “There’s not much that touches your lips: a partner, a fork or that cup. It’s important to think about that relationship – how you interact with an object.”
Saturday, Oct. 14: Francesco Mastalia launches new book of 108 portraits of yogis with exhibition and readings. “The significance of the number 108 is that it’s a sacred number in Eastern religious traditions,” Mastalia explains. “One stands for God or higher truth, zero stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, eight stands for infinity or eternity.”
It isn’t magic, co-owner Travis Ogden explains, but it is miraculous – something you have to engage with to experience. “Crystals are minerals. Our bodies are made of minerals and we need them.”
“We are extremely mindful of our terrain. What we teach are techniques to maintain traction at all times… We go as fast as necessary, but as slow as possible.”
“We don’t want to sell you something from a national or international conglomerate that doesn’t care about our community, doesn’t care about the environment or their employees,” says Chef Marcus Guiliano. “We just can’t support a company that does that. We’ve seen it in Ellenville. Even if 12 people lose their job here, that’s an impact.”
Friday, Sept. 8: The troupe’s giant papier-mâché and cardboard characters are recognized all over the world. With this outing, Bread & Puppet hopes to inspire the public to rebel and “underthrow the current system from the toes up.” The troupe’s founder and director, Peter Schumann, says that they want to create the “possibilitarian models of the new: the sourdough, the potato patches of the new.”

Twenty-one years of fundraising through the promotion of local artists have given the Jewish Federation of Ulster County the edge on good works. With the commitment to supporting the rich talent in our region while boosting a number of worthy causes, the organization once again hosts “Fall for Art,” a juried show, sale and cocktail event, to be held Thursday, September 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Chateau in Kingston.
