The primary to determine Republican Congressman John Faso’s Democratic challenger in New York’s 19th Congressional District will be held Tuesday, June 26.
In New York State, only enrolled party members may vote in primaries. The deadline to register or change party is Friday, June 1. That’s the date for in-person registration, and the date by which mailed registration must be post-marked. The deadline for mailed registration to be received is Wednesday, June 6.
Voter registration forms can be picked up at your county’s board of elections office, or you can download and print one here.
Polls will be open June 26 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Dutchess, Orange and Rockland counties, and noon to 9 p.m. in Ulster, Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan, Broome, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties.
John Faso (R-Kinderhook) was elected to his first term after defeating Zephyr Teachout in 2016. He has served in the State Assembly, State Senate and he ran for governor in 2006. Faso isn’t facing a Republican primary this year.

The candidates
Jeffrey Beals is a Woodstock resident, a member of the town’s Democratic Committee and teacher at Woodstock Day School. Beals is a Harvard graduate who returned to the Hudson Valley after a career with the CIA and the U.S. State Department, where he served as a diplomat in the Mideast.
Erin Collier is a Cooperstown resident and economist who has worked under the United Nations, Obama administration and the United States Agency for International Development, where she worked on food security issues. She graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University with a degree in agricultural economics and took a master’s degree in that field from Michigan State University.
Antonio Delgado is a Schenectady native and current Rhinebeck resident. Delgado is a former Rhodes Scholar, graduate of Harvard Law School and former CEO of a hip-hop entertainment company. He currently works as an attorney for powerhouse law firm Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld.
David Clegg, is a Kingston-based attorney in private practice. Clegg is a graduate of Yale Divinity School and an ordained deacon at Kingston’s St. James United Methodist Church. Clegg serves as chairman of the Ulster County Human Rights Commission.
Brian Flynn, of Hunter in Greene County is an entrepreneur and small businessman. Flynn’s campaign website touts his creation of hundreds of jobs across the region and his efforts to fight terrorism after the death of his brother in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.
Gareth Rhodes is an Esopus native, former White House intern and press aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Rhodes is taking a leave from Harvard Law School to run for the congressional seat.
Patrick Ryan, is a Kingston native and graduate of the U.S. Military Academy. During his time in the service, Ryan served two tours of duty in Iraq. Ryan left the Army with the rank of captain. He’s a Gardiner resident and formerly lived in Brooklyn, where he worked in data analysis.

Not enrolled in the Democratic Party, so I’m not voting in the primary, but I’m hoping either Clegg (1st choice) or Delgado (2nd choice) gets the nomination. I know Rhodes will probably get it, but they’ve both run positive campaigns (as have most of the candidates), and would make great representatives for the 19th.
I have to say that I’m impressed with the positivity that has, thus far, been exhibited in this race–especially given its importance. Personally, it’s refreshing to see candidates stay on message, without resorting to mud-slinging and name calling. Pleasantly surprised…

Go Beals or Clegg! We need real local people to represent this district- and not lobbyists, surveillance pros, or health care execs. Or wet-behind-the-ears Cuomo flunkies, for that matter!
I agree with Clegg–not with Beals. The man claims he’s a progressive, and wants to unseat Faso but, for some reason, spends the majority of his nebulous, “non-corporate” money attacking other Democrats? Why would anyone , let alone a self-described “Progressive Democrat” do that? Meh, sorry, he and Bennett Ratcliff need to cut the Faux-Bernie act.

Hmmm I haven’t seen any of these attacks. Where are they? Mailers? Facebook? I can’t recall him ever saying anything negative at a debate. But if he is I’m not so sure that’s a bad thing. All the candidates have plenty of good things going for them. But what happens if the eventual nominee has a major vulnerability and loses because of it? Might be good to get it all out there because it sure as heck is going to come out when Faso and his super pacs get rolling this September.
I’m referring to the letter, jointly signed by every candidate (as well as the DNC and Hinchey Family)–with the exception of Jeff Beals–agreeing to refrain from negative attacks on fellow Democrats. The premise being that doing so is counterproductive as attacking each other would weaken the Democrats’ ability to win in the general election. As predicted, the Beals camp balked.

I’m in for Erin Collier. She’s intelligent, has perseverance (graduated Cornell magna cum laude), worked for UN as an agricultural economist. She knows how it is for working people as she is from a fifth generation farm family…
C’mon, it’s a no-brainer. She’s ready, willing and very able. She can beat Faso hands down.
