Phoencia woman charged with murder; police say she gave victim alcohol and prescription drugs

A Phoenicia woman was charged with second-degree murder Friday night after, Ulster County Sheriff’s deputies said, she killed an as-yet-unidentified victim with what deputies called “a combination of alcoholic beverages and prescription drugs.”

Solane H. Verraine, 62, was arrested Friday night, Nov. 19, after Shandaken town police went to the rear apartment of 46 Route 214 in Phoenicia. According to deputies, the Shandaken police had gotten a call from Verraine at about 7:15 that evening reporting a death at the location. After determining the death was suspicious, deputies said the Shandaken cops called in the sheriff’s detectives. Further investigation revealed, deputies said, that Verraine poisoned the victim with alcohol and prescription drugs.

Verraine was arraigned in Hurley Town Court and sent to Ulster County Jail without bail.
Shandaken police and sheriff’s deputies are being assisted in the investigation by state police and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office. “The investigation is preliminary and further information will be forthcoming,” stated the press release.

Wow, I am shocked at these allegations. My husband and I personally know this couple. While shocked and deeply saddened, we knew the deceased to be a long-term severe alcoholic, who had pain management issues. We really hope that his unfailingly devoted wife will be vindicated.
