Bucket truck rolls over in Saugerties, injuring tree trimmer

Friday, October 25 at 1:14 p.m., Saugerties Police, Glasco Fire Department and DIAZ Ambulance responded to 26 Blue Hills Drive in the town of Saugerties for a 911 call reporting a truck rollover.

The vehicle, a 1997 Ford Special Purpose Crane Truck, was being used to cut down a tree when it rolled over on its side with the the tree trimmer in the bucket. The trimmer, 48-year-old Glen Thorne of Cairo, the owner and operator of a tree company, sustained back and leg injuries in the accident. He was treated at the scene by first responders and paramedics from DIAZ Ambulance, and then transported to the Health Alliance Broadway Campus in Kingston for further treatment.

Detectives concluded that the truck rolled as a result of Thorne’s failure to utilize the front outriggers on the truck when having the boom extended.

    Very dangerous situation. Our neighbor was killed working for power company in similar truck. This man is very lucky to escape injury. Special permits should be required before these are allowed in residential areas.

    Lucky no kids or people were near this truck when it collapsed.
