Joe Sinnott
The town board unanimously voted at their Aug. 14 meeting to honor iconic Marvel Comics illustrator and Saugerties native Joe Sinnott, who is retiring after 69 years of work, with a day of recognition on Aug. 31.
“We appreciate the many, many years that Joe devoted to making childhood fantasies possible through his work with the very well-known Marvel Comic ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘Spider-Man’ comics,” reads the body of the board’s resolution. “[Joe] design[ed] two U.S. Postal Service commemorative stamps … and record covers for the American singer Bing Crosby … it is a privilege to have Joe as a member of our Saugerties community (for 92 years to be exact).”
A commemorative exhibit, at which County Executive Pat Ryan will present Sinnott with the Pride of Ulster County award, will be held at the Kierstead House at 3:30 p.m.
Congratulations Joe, and thank you for helping a young boy’s imagination fly from rooftops, fight crime, and do amazing feats with super powers, all in beautiful, vivid color. In one of Stan Lee’s last interviews, he mentioned Joe, and stated; “… Best inker in the business.”, or something too that affect. And, let’s not forget how Joe’s “Treasure Chest” kept all of us kids occupied in the waiting rooms of just about every doctor and dentist in the area in the 1960’s and early 70’s. Not too mention, artwork on not one, but two US commemorative stamps. Joe, you are a true treasure.
Gooooo, Joe! What a blessing to have you and other Marvel Comics illustrators in our midst. Thank you for your inspiration.
A rightful honor, but, “We appreciate the many, many years that Joe devoted to making childhood fantasies possible through his work with the very well-known Marvel Comic ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘Spider-Man’ comics,” reads the body of the board’s resolution.” “Childhood?” “Fantasies?” At the very least, “fed the imagination and creativity of children, and adults.”
I guess you can dress up a town with New York style and economics, but you can’t broaden the view.
