Three candidates will be competing to fill the remainder of former assemblyman Pete Lopez’s term at special election on April 24. The seat will be on the ballot for a full two-year term on November 6.
Lopez, a six-term Republican, resigned his seat in early October after being appointed regional administrator for the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Chris Tague, 48, Schoharie town supervisor, county board of supervisors chair and county Republican chairman, will appear on the Republican, Conservative, Independence and Reform party lines. Tague is manager of Cobleskill Stone products.
Aiden O’Connor Jr., 29, of Durham, a first-term Greene County legislator, will appear on the Democratic, Working Families and Women’s Equality party lines. A professional paramedic, he serves as minority leader of the Greene County Legislature.
Wesley Laraway, 47, an enrolled Republican and a social studies high-school teacher in Middleburgh, is running as an independent on the Best Choice line.
The district includes Schoharie, Greene and Delaware counties, plus parts of Columbia, Otsego and Albany counties and the Town of Saugerties. It has about 6000 more enrolled Republicans than Democrats.
Democrats hold a two-to-one majority in the state Assembly.
The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
This is the height of irresponsible journalism. Your reporter’s error was not about getting the movie times wrong at the Orpheum, but instead a potentially election-changing error. The people who generally go out to vote are the people who prefer print over digital to get their news. When asked by someone, “Russian interference or incompetence?” I answered without hesitation, “Incompetence.” As a former journalist in NYC, I am embarrassed that a reporter would make such an egregious error. Where were the editors?
