Hugh Reynolds: Donald who?

The columnist Reynolds.

The columnist Reynolds.

Ever the hyperbolic, Hein, in published reports, asserted that the bridge, after additional abutment support was added, will actually be safer than if it hadn’t collapsed. He did not mention any costs associated with this unexpected upgrade. But I nitpick.

When the gala bridge-opening motor cavalcade with Hein in the lead convertible rolls across the new Carmine Liberta Bridge, be assured its support system — and his — will be rock solid. Hail to the chief.

Jack’s back, sort of

Regardless of the outcome of his appeal to salvage the Republican line, Conservative Party Assembly candidate Jack Hayes says he’s in for the duration. Sort of like what Davey Crockett and the boys said at the Alamo.

“I go on unabated,” Hayes said. “The message will go forth.”

The message from self-styled “citizen representative” Hayes is that Albany corruption will not be addressed by majority incumbents. The message from the state Appellate Court could be that politicians who can’t meet clearly stated deadlines do not deserve judicial relief.

Republican failure to file a Hayes (out of party) certification with the state Board of Elections by the July 28 deadline left the Conservative enrollee with only his own party’s nomination and the Independence Party line against juggernaught incumbent Democrat Kevin Cahill. Cahill pretends not to notice. Last I read, he was publicizing his annual summer reading program.

Hayes dismisses widespread reports that depriving him of the GOP line was deliberate payback for Conservatives refusing to endorse Republican state senators Bill Larkin and John Bonacic.

“I’ve heard that, too,” Hayes said from his Gardiner home. “I’ve known Roger [Rascoe, Republican chairman] for a long time. We’re friends. If Roger was going to do something like that, he would have told me before, man to man. He said it was a mistake [failure to file], and I believe him.”

“There’s dissension on the other side,” he added. “Maybe some of those people will come to Row C [the Conservative line].” Maybe pigs will fly over Gardiner.
