Gilbert Eaton, 5 months old, known as the Sinkhole Baby, and his mother, Jen Eaton, who lives on Washington Avenue, came out to watch.

Our intrepid photographer – and Kingston’s photographer laureate by appointment of Mayor T.R. Gallo – Phyllis McCabe was at the scene this morning when Washington Avenue, closed for five years due to the sinkhole which will forever live in the city’s collective memory, opened for vehicular traffic.

Here’s Phyllis’ report:
At 9:05 a.m., the DPW came to trim some branches from trees growing over Washington Avenue. Neighbors came out from their houses to wait for the opening.

At 9:45 a.m., the road was open to traffic. Before that two Trailways buses came down Washington Avenue, being told that it would be safe by 9:30 but they had to detour onto Linderman Avenue.
