Each summer, Highland Landing Park Association’s annual meeting falls on or near the birthday of the association’s president Matt Smith. As a result, members of the board of trustees top off each year’s potluck supper with a logo-frosted birthday cake for all to share. During the association’s business meeting on August 8, Smith itemized the park’s latest additions, including the eight new handicapped-accessible picnic tables. He also described what’s next — a 30-foot on-ground compass rose, thanks to a donation by Karen DeGaeta in memory of her late father Joseph DeGaeta; a yardarm flagpole, donated by the Highland Rotary Club in memory of late charter member Leo Rizzo; and, if all goes according to plan, an extension of the park northward across the mouth of the Twaafskill Creek, which currently marks the park’s northern boundary. Smith also promised that the plaques donated by friends of the park would soon be repositioned on the bulkhead on a slanted frame that would improve their visibility and security.
