The Saugerties Day Camp started its summer season on Monday, July 6, with about 160 children enrolled, but director Suzanne Dodig-Sussman expects the number to rise. The camp program calendar lists registration on its calendar through Thursday, July 9, but Dodig-Sussman said parents could register their children even after the “official” dates pass. The program runs through Aug. 14.
On Monday, the first day of camp, all the activities weren’t operating – the naturalist had a family emergency, for instance – but the kids all seemed absorbed in their activities and to be enjoying themselves.
Delia Lopez had not formed an opinion on that first day, but she recalled that last year was a lot of fun. One unusual activity: “We played with shaving cream, got it all over our hands. That was fun.” Her friend Harper Carlew agreed that the shaving cream, while messy, was indeed a lot of fun.
Not all the participants are happy with unlimited fun and games, however. “We only play,” said Desmond Conradfern. “I would like to do some math, to learn math and play games.”
Regular daily programs include arts and crafts, sports, nature study and supervised play. In addition, the program includes trips to a pool, to Puttin’ Plus, North-South Lake and others. Local organizations including the Girl Scouts and karate schools visit to offer demonstrations, Dodig-Sussman said.
Cost for the six-week full-day program is $460 for one child, $840 for two, $1215 for three and $1,595 for four or more. Half-day programs are less, and parents can also register their children for three-day or two-day per week programs at lower costs.
