Willy’s world

CJR: Got any more “poet bartenders”?

UW: I got artistic. The women that work here are all special and beautiful. I could be in a bad mood, but if I come to work, they put a smile on my face. I’m going to have an International flag outside this place instead of an American flag; I have a beautiful Asian working here, a beautiful Costa Rican girl working here, beautiful American ladies working here, a beautiful Sicilian lady …  I am covering the International Women’s Association.

CJR: Who dresses you every morning?

UW: Me. Whatever I find in my piles. I am a bit flamboyant. I am egotistical … and I’m good.

CJR: What time do you go to bed?

UW: Early in the morning. What time do I wake up? Late in the morning.

CJR: What’s the best cure for a hangover?

UW: A cold beer in the morning.

CJR: Did you vote for Obama?

UW: Yes. My favorite politician? JFK. We would have been JFK, RFK then MLK. I also voted for Bill Clinton, I thought he did this country good. My thing against politicians was how George Bush Jr. and Sr. both hated broccoli. I didn’t like broccoli till I found that out — now it’s my favorite vegetable — I hated those bastards.

CJR: What’s different about this bar than the other Uptown bars?

Look around. It’s like a rock ’n’ roll museum with sports, combined memorabilia. We got Elvis, Mick Jagger, John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe in one corner of the bar.

CJR: Do you have a Screen Actors Guild card?

UW: No, but I want one. I have been in four movies. Peace, Love and Misunderstanding cameo I had the whole screen to myself. Then Interstate 84 and two others.  I was on TV with the Yankees. Many interviews on baseball, on openings at Yankee games, an NBC special. Lotta TV time. I was the leader of the world champ superlightweight Billy Costello. I led him into the ring dressed in the crown and robe. They would interview me.  I am going to have a special showing of all of Billy’s championship fights on Jan. 29, in honor of the date he won the world championship title.

It is unbelievable that this is front page of the paper… The guy doesn’t even have a sign up, and the place looks like a toilet..but this is Kingston News.. There is so much cool stuff going on here..and we focus on this garbage.. Who cares about Uncle Willy..He’s an old hippie, who some how has a bar..Maybe there will be as much coke in the basement as Tony’s used to have…what a joke

I was raised in Rosendale and willie was just what the doctor ordered for a conservative town back in the early 70’s…Willie has been a close friend for over 45 years now…had tended bar at the Well during its hay-day along with his brothers kev and flower and was one of his many ushers at BETH AND HIS WEDDING..Will never be another like him.
    Keep the faith..

I loved going to Uncle Willy’s birthday parties in Rosendale. I thought it was the coolest thing to be able to eat a cake by sticking your face in it (well, I was only 6). Good times. Glad to see he’s still kickin’.

Uncle Willy-I worked for you at The Well in the early 1970’s and I have very fond memories of that wonderful place and of you. I was the “Pisces Lady” better known as Janine and a friend of Gay, Steve LeFevere, Rusty and Terry Wilbur, etc. I remember when that group Crackin played at The Well and I was good friends with them too. You look great and I remember that you always looked out for everybody and would take people’s keys away from them and send them upstairs if they were not fit to drive. Happy Holidays to you….I remember your brothers Flower and Kevin too.
