Highland town supervisor Paul Hansut versus Michael Guerriero

Michael Guerriero is currently a member of the Lloyd town board who is running on the Democratic ticket.

Why did you decide to run for town supervisor of Lloyd?

I have decided to run for supervisor of Lloyd because as a town I know we can do better.Sitting on the town board for the last two years as councilman has shown me that we need more balance in our local government.

What positions, experiences and skills do you believe will make you a competent supervisor?

My integrity, honesty and ability to listen and act in the betterment of the taxpayers of Lloyd. In addition, I understand the importance of fiscal responsibility.

Running my own successful business for over forty years has taught me the need for competent spending and the management of people. It’s the little things that matter most. Taking the time to hear all opinions and managing resources efficiently are the principles of honest and effective government.

What is your opinion of the draft comprehensive plan in light of recent concerns and criticisms coming from Scenic Hudson and others?

Although great effort and time has brought the plan this far, I feel more attention to the village proper is necessary. The gateway zone (which is along 9W from Haviland Road to Milton Avenue) is a long-term project. Revitalization of the town is needed now.

How do you believe Highland can best harness ecotourism with the half- million visitors coming to the Walkway Over the Hudson each year, as well as the extensions to your rail-trail and the soon-to-be opened Highland Landing Park along the Hudson River to bring business/dollars into town?

Marketing and advertising in New York City publications and forums is a must. Informing people how the Walkway and rail-trail can be reached via Metro North and buses will help drive visitors. I also think a community-based committee to further investigate ideas will be useful.

In addition, I think the revitalization of the town will set the foundation for all future growth. It is necessary that our town thrive and flourish in order to attract tourists.

What are you ideas for long-term infrastructure for water and sewer?

Our water and sewer usage is well below our full capacity. As the town grows we will take all new development into consideration and keep the taxpayers’ best interests in mind.

What do you see as the top three greatest challenges facing the Town of Lloyd right now?

Growth, tourism and emergency planning.

If elected, what would be your top three priorities?

My top priority will always be keeping our citizens safe and secure, especially during storms and emergencies. My second priority will be to promote economic development, and lastly, affordability for all of our taxpayers.
