Free Comic Book Day
The idea is simple, really: Every year, on the first Saturday of May, you pick out or receive a designated free comic book at your local comic shop. But the nationwide Free Comic Book Day campaign can be even more fulfilling than at first it seems. The extra value comes from seeing what everyone else got; buying comics to catch up on a series that you got behind on; immersing yourself in the pages before we’ve even left the store; or countless other benefits to spending time with comics.
This year’s Free Comic Book Day takes place on Saturday, May 4. Our family will be at October Country in New Paltz – see you there? For more information about Free Comic Book Day, visit www.freecomicbookday.com.
Anemones at Battenfeld Farm
Need a quick fix of spring? Psst! Come here! I have some Hudson Valley insider information to share with you. For immediate gratification from the magic that only fresh anemone blooms can bring, head over to Battenfeld Farm. Its self-serve cooler includes assorted sizes of anemone bouquets, along with a few calla lilies and ranunculus too, with prices that feel like you’re getting a good deal because you’re friends with the farmer or something.
While you’re there, peek through the door into the greenhouse and gaze at the sea of color. But remember, anemones are only available until May; then you have to wait until the season starts up again in September. The self-serve cooler is open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. and is cash only.
Battenfeld Farm is located at 856 Route 199 in Red Hook. For more information, call (845) 758-8018 or visit www.anemones.com.
I Love My Park Day
Part of spring is the inevitability of spring cleaning. But here’s an idea: How about spring cleaning somewhere different – like a park, or a historic site? Saturday, May 4 is I Love My Park Day for New York’s State Parks.
I believe in volunteering, but sometimes it can be hard to gauge what a regular commitment actually requires, so one-shot events like this one really appeal to me. Besides, it’s a way to care for a place that you already visit. But it can also motivate you into going somewhere that you’ve been curious to check out. For example, every time you pass Bannerman’s Island when you’re on the train, don’t you resolve to make a plan to get there “this year”?
How about the Walkway? Here’s its plan for I Love My Park Day. In addition to the epic views, easy bike-riding and walkability, the Walkway will attempt a new world record. You could be part of the 3,000 people needed to help make history by forming the World’s Largest Line of People singing and dancing.
A list of participating parks, including Minnewaska State Park Preserve and Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, and their project plans can be found online at www.ptny.org.
