What is your favorite hangout?
SUNY New Paltz, my alma mater. It feels like home there. When I was going to graduate school at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, even though it had a beautiful campus, I would still do most of my studying at the Sojourner Truth Library on the SUNY New Paltz campus.
Tell us something that we never would have guessed about you.
I have a wicked sweet tooth. That is kind of surprising to people, because other than that, I tend to eat what I consider very healthy, organic and local food. But for those who know my father, it clearly runs in the family!
What keeps you here?
Family mostly, but also my work and clients.
What would you change?
I think the town should support and encourage the college expansion. It’s what really makes New Paltz special.
Where would we find you on Sunday mornings?
New Paltz Rock Yoga for Hot Power 50, and then the Main Street Bistro. Until very recently I worked every Sunday with my father in the garage. But my younger brother has assumed that role now.
What is your favorite virtue?
Kindness, because it costs you nothing and makes the world a better place.
What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?
Criminal investigation or some form of law enforcement. I was brought up to always do the right thing and follow the rules. I think that’s what makes this country so great.
Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here?
Dino Toscani. While getting coffee one day, Dino asked me if I spoke Arabic and had a current passport. I answered “Yes,” and he insisted that the following week he would need me to travel to Dubai and be his translator for an important meeting with the prince. I never heard back!
What qualities do you admire most in others?
Honesty, fairness and kindness. I think we could benefit if we all tried to display these qualities a little more.
What is your idea of happiness?
A healthy family. It’s the one thing that, as much as we try and control it, can be tough to cope with.
What is your idea of misery?
Not having any hope. When you don’t have hope you don’t have faith, and that’s a very sad place.
What talent do you wish you had been given?
Although I really appreciate art, I lack the skills to do it!
What is your main fault?
I hold everyone to a very high standard. I try my best, and wish others did so as well.
For which fault do you have the most tolerance?
Ignorance. It’s a shame it exists. But if we can educate people, maybe we can change their view.
What is your favorite motto?
Do the right thing.
