POLL: Esopus Bridge color (closed)

AFP_bridge2 s

In the coming weeks, the bridge over the Esopus will be repainted. The state DOT offers four color options. Mayor Bill Murphy asked the Saugerties Times to put it to a vote. We ask that only Saugerties residents vote. Polls close Thursday, April 11 at 11:59 p.m.

If you’re having trouble voting, send an email with your selection to [email protected] and it will be tallied.

Probably because of the second sentence in the 5 sentence article you couldn’t be bothered to read.

“The state DOT offers four color options.”

  1. Bill Murphy

    Tricia,
I wanted Blue as well, but the State DOT, informed me that blue was not a Stat approved color….Sawyer Blue would have been perfect originally they only offered Red and Green, but I was able to have them add the two grays…..Thanks for your input….Bill

  2. Mary

    I don’t know about red….I don’t think it will blend we’ll. too “farm-y””
Even though plain gray SOUNDS boring I bet it would look
fresh and nice (especially if we can get some pretty planters on it)
I think green would also look good. No red!

  3. Dan

I think we should use all 4 colors to represent the arts and LGBT community saugerties openly accepts.

  4. Caitlyn Ball

Green!!! Gray is too commonplace and although red would be nice, I think the contrast of the green bridge during the fall colors is stunning and would look too rusted against the lush green of the spring and summer.

  5. Chad McPeek

Think of the times when you were driving and you said to the person on the other end phone, “crossing the green bridge be there in a few minutes”. As long as I can remember it has been green, so why change it? It blends into the surroundings well and we won’t have to worry about anybody complaining about the color change. Regardless, the bridge is and has been in need of a paint job for a number of years. I’m just thankful that it is going to get done.

  6. Angela Mastracchio

Would have loved blue! But as choices revealed prefer the bright Green! Glad that the choice is being left to Saugerties Residents. Thanks!

  7. Michele Michaels

Although red has always been my favorite color, I think green naturally compliments the bridge’s surroundings and it also supports the notion of “Green Ecology”!

  8. Penny Ducker

If you want to see what the RED looks like take a ride across the Eddyville bridge on Rt 213, that was painted red last fall. The red is a little garish, not quite as pretty a red as the Golden Gate in San Fran.
I think the green would look better.

  9. Rich

The Eddyville bridge looked beautiful blending w/ the fall colors, and I think people like the bright color in the dead of winter as well.

The rest of the story – by Robert Ford – The Saugerties Times

For more than a year and a half, village trustees have been talking about the awful condition of the bridge over the Esopus Creek. After being turned down a number of times by the state DOT when they asked for it to be repainted, they began to talk amongst themselves after their monthly meetings about taking the matter into their own hands.
One plan quietly mentioned was getting several gallons of paint from Smith Hardware, sneaking over in the dead of night and painting the bridge themselves.
The second involved getting some high school seniors to do the job, but the fear of someone getting injured stopped them every time.
But now, those plans of late-night skullduggery can be saved for other projects.
And now you all know the rest of the story.

  11. Austin

Definitely Green, It’s been that color forever and it’s known as “The Green Bridge”. Everybody uses it as a landmark when giving directions and so on. Why change it???

  12. "Pa" Roos

“Pa” Roos here, and like many others my first thought was “Sawyer” Blue also(with white guard railings no less)! But since that is not an option I’d say that the Green is my first choice. BOTH grays are DRAB, but I am a little surprised that the clubhouse leader at the moment is “Cathouse” Red(a more polite way than I would normally say it…hehe.)

Thanks to The Coach, Hank Smith, for passing along the link for me to vote — I will do the same for others who still answer “Saugerties, N.Y.”, when asked, “Where are you from”?.

I hope you current Saugertesians don’t mind a few of us “ex-patriate” townies weighing in on this color choice decision?

    Be well old hometown!!

  13. Brandon

Isn’t the Rosendale bridge Light Blue? Whatever. I would vote green. I agree with Austin, why change it.

  14. Jenn

GREEN!! The gray’s are too drab and the red, well….I just dont’t think it will blend as well (too harsh). I think a nice updated shade of green would really bring the bridge back to life and make it stand out against the backdrop of the town, creek and mountains!!!

  15. Mary Alice Kearney

I’m really hoping green beats red! Diamond Mill roof is MAROON, red would clash! Stay green!

  16. Debra E

Your vote won’t count unless you vote officially at the top of this page. Where you see the four color choices, you’ll see the word “VOTE”. Click that and place your vote officially. (I like green.)

  17. Connie

Why is such a decision being left to the 50 people who actually read this newspaper? Most people don’t even know this poll is going on. Lets keep something sacred instead of letting all these transplants change something else in our town. Saugerties is so big on staying green….so lets keep it that way!!!

  18. Bill Murphy

Connie I disagree with you assumption that only the 50 people as you put it are voting on this. So far 571 have voted. As far as most people not knowing, that is not true at all. I also contacted the Freeman to let them know, and have sent out several mass notices through digital media to let people know of this. Also, I ask the Saugerties Times to help me with this, so I could get it out to the public, and I appreciate their support on this. I thought it would be fun to let the residents decide. If I had made the decision myself or with just my board,I am sure many people would have complained as to whatever color we chose. This was suppose to be something fun, to get the community involved in a making a decision of which we could all see the results. I think it has been a very good thing, and with the exception of you comment, I have had nothing but positive feedback. But with that being said, I do truly respect your sentiment to keep it green, and right now it looks like it is leaning that way. Thanks for voting.

    1. brad cantwell

well said Bill, I personally do not read the Saugerties Times on the regular but found my way here through social media. Some people will always be complainers even though residents didn’t have to be asked in the first place.

  19. Sean

Red looks great on the Eddyville bridge on 213. Looks nice and fresh and will also hide the rust as the paint/bridge ages. If you have a chance check out the Eddyville bridge on 213 and you’ll see what I mean.

  20. Mike

Definitely green- it’ll be hard to see the beautiful creek etc with a big ole bright red bridge. The focus should be on everything but the bridge.

  21. Alex Wade

Te DOT bridge in Rosendale was recently painted bright blue. Our bridge rusts easily so Red would make the inevitable rust show less.

  22. Don Hackett

I think it’s great that so many people have given there input on the color of the bridge. Thanks Bill for a great idea and getting the community involved. I see some old friends have voted that no longer live in saugerties thanks for still caring about your community. Trustee Hackett ( red )

  23. Doug Engel

Red sounds fun and cute unless the bridge is in your viewshed in which case it will dominate the view and take away from the beauty of the falls and surroundings. Lets not make the village look silly…the bridge should blend in with its environment.

  24. Sandy M

Green! Something’s are better left alone. If the bridge is done in a new color, it takes away a little bit of out towns history. This bridge has been green for a very long time, lets keep it that way. Sometimes change is not a good thing. I’m glad we were given the opportunity to vote.

  25. Nadine C.

Green, it’s worked this long no sense changing it now!! However I am with everyone else, sawyer blue would be great.

  26. Jim bob Henry

What happened to friendly historical saugerties? The amount of history in this town is amazing… So why change it? I have lived here my entire life, and for all that time that bridge has been the green bridge… People keep saying its time for a change. Well look around this town has changed enough and is already losing its history. It’s the small things like this that slowly take the history and our pasts in this town away.

  28. Pete

Did someone actually say “Anything but Commie Red”???
What a closed minded FOOL. Do people even still use that stupid McCarthyistic term? Apparently so.

    I vote red also.

  29. Bob Gardner

If you have Gardner blood in your genes I hope you vote GREEN. Our family members have been here since the first settlers arrived. This bridge is new compared to that time but after it was built it was always the “Green Bridge” and everyone Gardner who ever crossed it refered to it as the “Green Bridge”. It’s tradition.

  30. Debra E

Hello folks – When you enter Saugerties from I87, there’s a lovely sign that says “Welcome to Friendly Saugerties”. Come on! Where’s the friendly now? It is indeed “only” a bridge color and there’s more than one way to vote your choice. Can we please just vote and try to curtail the derogatory comments?

  31. Emma

I am just happy we have a bridge. 🙂 Red is what I voted for but I wouldn’t mind any of the colors!

  32. Holly baby

Excuse me. Gardners are not the only ones who call it the green bridge. Everyone does. You take that phony baloney bullpoop and shove it somewhere else. And FYI the diamond mill does not have red roofing. You’re a bunch of potatoes. That’s right I said potatoes. Now let’s go vote for red!!! Red mofos red!!!!!!! Vote red or get a life. How about both.

  33. Michael Schatzel

It has been the green bridge for ever you can’t change it now after all the years. Green all the way.

  34. Irish pride

Those stupid Italians think they’re all that. Not now!!!!! GO GREEN!!!! LONG LIVE THE IRISH!!!!!!!!!

  35. Pam

Who cares about nature eats chop all the trees down and paint it red. And there is no such thing as friendly. It’s the 21st century get over it,

    1. barb

Growing up we used to say the village bridge………we never said gray bridge in which it was the original color… so why did people say green bridge… It is the village bridge. And another thing is that saugerties has always been unique in it’s own way……Making a change will only make more people interested in seeing it which will bring in more tourists…

  36. PATRIOT

I CANNOT BELIEVE ALL YOU LIBERALS ACTUALLY WANNA PAINT THIS BRIDGE THE COLOR OF THE COMMUNISTS.

A VOTE FOR RED IS A VOTE FOR STALIN AND KIM JONG UN.

BETTER DEAD THEN RED PEOPLE, COME ON!!

  37. Jen

I have lived here for my entire life, born & raised, and I have never heard anyone ever call it “the green bridge.” When I was a little kid, the bridge was silver. When they changed it to green I thought it was ugly. I think the red will be beautiful & vibrant, and I think it will look stunning against the fall leaves and will brighten up a dreary winter day!

      1. brad cantwell

haha who are you? my entire family lives in saugerties. and this was a joke. i was mocking previous comments, so you’re the fool not being able to pick up on it.

  38. Deborah Tome

I have lived here my entire life and have never heard anyone call it the green bridge. It was silver when I was growing up and I think silver would still be a good color. I voted red and am not Communist. This is about a color, not politics.

  39. Lisa

If you go red, just don’t paint the grates on the road red, too. The one in Eddyville looks like blood all over the ground…

  40. barbra

I think some of these people are nuts. I have lived in Saugerties all my life, and I think the bridge should stand out. Red would do it.

  41. Peter Finger

Light grey with led lights that can change color on a timer. I was in Tampa last week and the art museum and all the downtown brides have these always changing led lights which create real excitement.
