The Main event: Rosendale Street Festival this weekend

Sunday performers include Power of Song, Wally Nichols, Bluestone, Melinda DeMaio, AsmarA, Zumbi Zumbi, Jeff Entin and Bob Blum, Cleoma’s Ghost, Lindsey Webster, Jesse Kilguss, Spiral up Kids, A Perfect Gift: All That Is Jazz, Trial & Error, the Compact, Kurt Henry, Nancy Knicely Armstrong, Barbara Dempsey and Company, Tulula, Grey Horizon, the Sweet Clementines, Evan Gottfreid, Welldiggers, 4 Gun Ridge, Sabor con Colour, For No One, Fre Atlast & the Rosendale Improvement Association Brass Band and Social Club, Dylan Emmett, Yard Sale, Joey Eppard, Mr. Rusty and Voodelic.

After their 5 p.m. Sunday set on the Canal Lock Stage, Fre Atlast and the Rosendale Improvement Association Brass Band and Social Club will lead a parade down Main Street to the Mountain Stage, where local favorites Voodelic will play the last set of the Festival.

“Come and have a good time is what we want everybody to do,” said Knicely. “We do ask for donations, but if you’re just sitting home and you have no money, come on down.” Those donations are important, though: The Festival costs $40,000 to stage, and with corporate sponsorship down in the wake of the recession, organizers must rely on out-of-pocket contributions from people on the street. Any profits are dedicated to funding music summer camp and college scholarships for area youth, providing instruments to students with special needs and sponsoring workshops, rehearsals and performances that pair student musicians with professionals.

Those who’d like to volunteer their time can sign up ahead of the Festival or just show up willing to work. It takes 100 to 120 volunteers to make the weekend run smoothly, from people taking donations at the end of the street and passing out programs to garbage collection, ice delivery and musician transport. And for those who’d like to contribute on a deeper level, there will be a meeting on Tuesday, August 14 at 7 p.m. at the Rosendale Rec Center to begin planning next year’s Festival.

The Rosendale Street Festival and second annual Hudson Valley Short Flix Fest hit Main Street Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22. Attendance is free; donations are gratefully accepted.
