Fun out of the sun – summer 2012 performing arts offerings in and around Ulster County

This summer the ensemble will be presenting three productions in rotating repertory. One is The 39 Steps, adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and the movie by Alfred Hitchcock, and directed by Russell Treyz. There will also be two Shakespeare plays: the familiar Romeo and Juliet, directed by Christopher V. Edwards; and Love’s Labour’s Lost, directed by Terrence O’Brien, the more rarely performed comic tale of a king and his courtiers who have sworn off wine, women and song for three years to devote themselves to study. You can guess how long their resolve holds out when a princess and her comely entourage stop by for a state visit.

Performances begin at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The schedule is much too complicated to replicate here, but you can download a full brochure online at the link above. Ticket prices usually range from $27 to $60, with discounts for seniors, kids and students; the Festival is also offering a special rate of $90 for a family of four on family nights, July 10, 17 and 24.

The hottest venue by far in sleepy downtown Ellenville is the historic Shadowland Theatre, a 1920-vintage vaudeville theatre whose lobby has undergone a full restoration. Shadowland’s estimable reputation for professional-quality stage productions is largely due to its longstanding policy of only hiring performers who are members of Actors’ Equity. The result is that at least one production every season brings a big-name actor or two to the small city on the west flank of the Shawangunks.
