Fun out of the sun – summer 2012 performing arts offerings in and around Ulster County

The Jazz at the Maverick series will start on July 28 with a program titled “Cole Porter in Paris,” featuring Perry Beekman, Terry Blaine, Peter Tomlinson and Lou Pappas. The Ébène Quartet turns toward the jazz side on August 18. August 25 will spotlight the dueling pianos of Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes. And on September 8 pianist Fred Hersch will present a program called “Autumn in Paris.”

We must also mention the popular Saturday morning series of young people’s concerts at the Maverick, which are free to kids and only $5 for adults. July 7 brings in Simon Powis on classical guitar; July 14, Andrew Appel on harpsichord; August 4, the ever-popular Elizabeth Mitchell and Family; and August 11, Jon Klibonoff on piano.

Woodstock Fringe Festival

Neither Bird-on-a-Cliff nor the Woodstock Fringe Festival had posted a summer 2012 schedule as of press time. However, Bird-on-a-Cliff held auditions in April for Measure for Measure, so we can reasonably suppose that Shakespeare’s “problem comedy” about a corrupt public official outwitted by a saintly-but-cagey young woman will be on the boards this summer. The Fringe Festival typically runs the first two weeks in August at Byrdcliffe. Stay tuned to future issues of Alm@nac for more details as they are released.

And have a fun summer!
