Inside Diamond Mills hotel and restaurant

The neutral color scheme of the interior is calming and easy on the eye. Chairs from the banquet hall match the colors and style of the small conference room and bridal suite. Throughout the property, the taupe walls shift to gray, depending on the light. In the hotel they are complemented by a woven carpet, and chocolate and aqua accents in the upholstered headboards, draperies, and chair fabrics.

In order to create “something that didn’t feel like every other mall hotel,” Viola selected individual pieces, which were then manufactured for commercial use. She searched for items locally whenever possible and made an effort to link the interior design to the styles of the 19th-century village. For example, the glass-topped desks in the hotel rooms, purchased from Restoration Hardware, feature large, weathered corbels as supports that echo the roofline details of Saugerties’ brick buildings. Industrial pulleys, fishing weights, and a canoe maquette, which is displayed on the wall of the restaurant, are decorative details that reflect aspects of Saugerties’ history, as is the large, blown-up sepia photo of the Cantine Mill in the restaurant. Reproductions of etchings of rural scenes in the hotel rooms evoke the local countryside, and six replicas of historic New York State maps hang in the hotel lobby and hallways.

The balconies, which are raised so that seated occupants can easily peer over the railings, are fully appointed with wicker or wrought iron tables and chairs. The restaurant, which seats 150, is airy and light, with the stone fireplace adding a note of warmth. The traditional chandeliers, which have small shades and a weathered wood finish, suggest the rusticity of Tuscany, while the vintage suspended ceiling fans are an industrial touch. The bridal suites are adorned with authentic French antiques, including small vanities and a “gorgeous” armoire.

“It’s very low-key,” said Viola. “We wanted to keep it interesting, by playing on European elegance and the industrial. It’s quite eclectic. That wasn’t our intention, but it’s the melting pot that reflects New York.”

Her favorite room is the tiled-floor bar, which features a mahogany bar crafted by a family-owned company in Connecticut (the company also made the mahogany tables in the restaurant). Tungsten lights and dark wall coverings suggest the cavernous intimacy of a pub, whose authentic feel the Scottish-born Viola can vouch for.

The banquet room, which features a series of large French doors opening to the balcony, can be divided into four different spaces; a bridal party could divide the space so that one room serves as a reception area while the adjoining space is laid out with dining tables. The patterns in the olive green, chocolate, and khaki carpet coordinate with the coffered ceiling, and three styles of chairs, including comfy armchairs with swivel desktops, complement each other. Still under construction is the small conference room on the second floor, which features a large bay window and will be equipped for media presentations (including Wifi, of course, which is available throughout the building).

Walsh said she’s already booked weddings for many weekends June through October, as well as a luthier’s conference and an event for a construction company.

    The Tavern is a fantastic addition to the culinary world in the area. The staff goes “above and beyond” to make sure customers are happy. The food speaks for itself…THE BEST IN THE AREA! However, the food would only be secondary if it was not for the wonderful management who have out done themselves with the pressure of opening a new restaurant. This entire team, The Chef, his staff, management, servers etc deserve the credit for making Diamond Mills Tavern a success!!!! To find people in this area that are as devoted as the employees of Diamond Mills is rare. Tom, Chef, Lisa, Bridget, Bonnie & Sam definitely have what it takes to make this place a success.

    What do I think about Diamond Mills? Its absolutely amazing…..thanks to Kimberly R. Ryan, a Saugerties native, and an associate of the architectual firm. She was the brains and brawn behind the designing and building of this hotel. Way to go Kim…..your hard work, dedication and brilliance should not go unnoticed!

    My wife and I were looking at real estate in the area and visiting some old haunts. We found ourselves at the end of the day in Hudson needing a place to stay the night. In searching the web we came across Diamond Mills Hotel and Tacern in Saugerties. It sounded good so we zipped down there and were amazed by how well appointed the newly built hotel was. After freshening up we headed to the tavern and continued to be pleasantly surprised by the upscale nature of the place. Tastefully designed and decorated the Tavern (as did the hotel room) overlooks a dramatically lit waterfall. A polite and professional staff proceeded to serve us a delicious meal. Our one regret was not leaving enough room for dessert. The prices were a bit high, but we knew that going in as we were looking for an evening quality, upscale dining and accommodations. You get what you pay for and Diamond Mills did not disappoint
