Hugh Reynolds: Inaugural messages

Bernardo’s obvious ire at Hein’s blowing off her inaugural — he chose to bloviate at a Frank Skartados announcement speech for Assembly Tuesday night — was grounded in a tense getting-to-know-you meeting between staffs last week.

At the time, Hein asked Bernardo for an advance copy of her speech. Bernardo politely explained that she “wasn’t elected (chairwoman) yet.” Hein said he had paid legislative leaders the courtesy of advance copies of his speeches. “But you were elected, I’m not” she told me she said. “If you want to hear the speech, come to session.”

Hein, in an obvious snub he may live to regret, instead, headed south to a routine political function.

Just as well. He would have turned 14 shades or red at hearing Bernardo’s take-no-prisoners stemwinder.

The die has been cast. Let the games begin!
