Travis Nissen remembered warmly by Miller students, fellow officers

Burruby said the kids got her through the initial shock with kind words to console her, knowing of her strong bond with Nissen. School guidance counselor Scott Ricketson has an office next to Nissen’s, and was the only other male on the support staff and bonded quickly with Nissen.  “Some of the kids who were in trouble a lot were the ones who had the hardest time because he impacted them the most,” recalled Ricketson. “They realized after his death that he wasn’t there to get them in trouble, but to help them. Some of them needed him the most.” Ricketson insisted that Nissen was family, not just a co-worker, who would do anything for anyone with a smile, even when called in the wee hours of the morning. “God must have needed a hard-working police officer to keep him safe,” one girl’s letter read.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to The Travis A. Nissen Memorial Fund, c/o of Merck CPAs, PO Box 3537, Kingston, NY 12402.
