The department came under criticism by Mayor-elect Shayne Gallo during this year’s Kingston mayoral campaign. Gallo raised concerns about the department’s role in providing services in Kingston’s Midtown neighborhood. The mayor-elect said he would be watching the recruitment process “very carefully.”
Hein said the search for a successor would be conducted in much the same manner as that which resulted in the appointment of Public Health Commissioner Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck in 2009. The new commissioner’s biggest challenges, according to Hein, will be “continuing to provide essential services while keeping in mind limitation of dollars available and the escalation of state mandates.”
