Surf’s Up! High Five Revival hits Kingston, New Paltz

Surf purists may take issue with the High Five Revival’s less-traditional sound, which hints at its members’ punk and metal backgrounds. Nevertheless, the group, which released a self-titled, four-song EP in 2010, has been a hit at local venues and out-of-town events like 2011’s Instro Summit festival in North Carolina. Anxiety Attack, a collection of Jansen’s 2008 demos, is streaming on the band’s MySpace page.

“Recording those first songs at home was just something I did for fun, I had no idea the band would get this far,” says Jansen. “For all of us, though, this is definitely the most fun band we’ve been in.” And, as they frantically twist and do the swim, audiences no doubt agree.

The High Five Revival will play Friday at Skytop Steakhouse in Kingston (show starts at 9 p.m.; admission is free) and Saturday at the Coney Island Rock ’n’ Roll Roadshow Homecoming event at Cabaloosa in New Paltz with Tigeriss, Yard Sale, and more (show starts at 10 p.m.; admission is $7).
