Manny will soon be celebrating his 40th year flinging pies, and says he has the backache and shoulder pain to prove it. He is happiest when the store is booming with people. “I love to accomplish things,” he said, “I have customers for 40 years. It makes me proud. Makes me feel so special.”
Ginny Bowie of the Town of Ulster said that she went to the new location just because she is fond of the other two Savona’s pizza places. Twin daughters Deana and Lizzie, 10, and son Evan, 12, split a pie while Bowie talked Bay Ridge geography with Manny. “I eat in the other two restaurants all the time, and that’s why we came here,” said Bowie. “One is better than the next — it’s so good … It’s better than the pizza I used to have in Brooklyn.”
Deana said she liked the thin crust, a trademark of East Coast pie. “I like the cheese. It wasn’t chewy… tastes like professional pizza. And the sauce is good too.” Her sister Lizzy concurred. “The crust was very well done,” she raved. “It was excellent pizza. The cheese was very very good. Better than any other pizza I ever tasted.”
How did the pizza weigh-in with brother Evan? “Very awesome.”
